Racing Dudes Three Stars of the Week: Early Derby, Oaks Contenders Emerge

This past weekend’s racing included a pair of Kentucky Derby (G1) prep races and one for the Kentucky Oaks (G1), giving us a look at some early contenders. When the dust settled, here’s who we injected into our latest Three Stars of the Week:

( Content Continues Below Ad )

1. Life Is Good

Big surprise, Bob Baffert won a Derby prep at Santa Anita Park with a potential horse of a lifetime *yawn*. Life Is Good earned a sparkling 101 Beyer Speed Figure for winning Saturday’s Sham Stakes (G3) and backed up his ultra-impressive debut, opinions were mixed regarding how he looked at the end. Was he just bored in the stretch, or was the son of Into Mischief perhaps showing distance limitations? Watch the replay and see for yourself.

2. Anothertwistafate

Already a stakes winner on synthetic and dirt, Anothertwistafate earned his biggest score yet in Saturday’s San Gabriel Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. Trainer Peter Miller indicated that he intends to send the 5-year-old intact son of Scat Daddy across the country for the Pegasus World Cup (G1), but will leave open the possibility of running on either dirt or turf. Either way, follow the trail because Miller rarely ships to lose.

3. Kalypso

A day after Life Is Good earned his first 10 points for the Derby, the barn celebrated Kalypso achieving the same score along the Kentucky Oaks trail for winning the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2). Though the race was a 7-furlong sprint, jockey Joel Rosario said afterward that he felt she would have no problem going longer.
