Race Recaps Newspaperofrecord Romps in G2 Miss Grillo September 30, 2018 Race Recaps Newspaperofrecord Romps in G2 Miss Grillo September 30, 2018 By: Brandon 'B$' Bauer twitteremail Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article ELMONT, NY – Newspaperofrecord made it look easy as she cruised to victory in Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park. This was the second win in as many career starts for the 2-year-old Irish bred Chad Brown trainee. Newspaperofrecord went straight to the front and was followed by Kitty’s Legacy, Stellar Agent, Decorated Ace, and Dogtag. As they moved around the track, Newspaperofrecord maintained her easy lead as the rest of the field strung out behind her as she set fractions of :23.44, :48.26, and 1:12.76. Halfway through the final turn, it looked like Newspaperofrecord would face competition, yet at the top of the stretch, she shot clear of any potential challengers. She cruised to an easy 6 1/2 length victory and needed little urging from jockey Irad Ortiz. Varenka came out on top in the four-horse battle for second and was followed by Stellar Agent, Dogtag, and Miss Technicality. “Our plan was try to relax her and finish, but she broke so sharp and I didn’t take anything away,” Ortiz said. “She put me right there and made the lead so easy. She was relaxed on the lead, so I took it and it was good for us.” With two career starts under her belt, Newspaperofrecord will be pointed to the Breeders Cup in November. “I was feeling pretty good turning for home, her ears popped and it looked like she was just galloping,” said trainer Chad Brown. “You really never know until you turn them loose. She was loaded and pretty impressive, and he geared her down just in the shadow of the wire. Obviously, we’re going to run in the Breeders’ Cup, so hopefully she didn’t do much today.” Newspaperofrecord returned $4.00 to win, $2.90 to place, and $2.50 to show. Varenka brought back $7.00 to place and $4.40 to show, while Stellar Agent paid $4.20 to show.
