(Nov. 4, 2016) – E Five Racing Thoroughbreds New Money Honey ($15) collared pacesetting Lull at the sixteenth pole and held off late bids from Coasted and Cavale Doree to win the ninth running of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) for 2-year-old fillies by a half-length on Friday afternoon at Santa Anita Park. Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Javier Castellano, New Money Honey covered the mile on a firm turf course in 1:34.01. It marked the third victory in the race for Brown, who had previously triumphed with Maram in 2008 and Lady Eli in 2014. It is Brown’s eighth Breeders’ Cup victory. For Castellano, it was his seventh Breeders’ Cup victory and first in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. New Money Honey, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, has won two of three career starts. BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF QUOTES Winning jockey Javier Castellano (New Money Honey) – “I tried to secure my spot around the first turn and then I tried to save all the ground the best I could. She gave me a very good run down the lane and it was good enough to win the race.” Winning trainer Chad Brown (New Money Honey) – “She’s made of steel. She’s a terrific chapter in a terrific story.” Second-place jockey Mike Smith (Coasted) – “I could have had a better trip. Having said that, she’s some kind of filly. Weaving between horses with 14 horses on the turf is tough. She was gallant in her effort. Man, I look for big things from her.” Second-place trainer Leah Gyamati (Coasted) – “I thought we could have won if we didn’t have to start and stop and start and stop.” Third-place jockey Flavien Prat (Cavale Doree) – “I had a good trip. I broke a little slow and then I asked her to put herself in the race. She was rank in the first turn because she never had run on such a tight turn before. On the backside, she relaxed well and then turning for home, she made a great move.” Third-place trainer Christophe Ferland (Cavale Doree) – “She’s run really well (this year). She’s a very good filly and I like her a lot. We will try as hard as we did today to win the Pouliches next year. I think she will be better suited for the French tracks, but she ran really well.” Jockey Florent Geroux (La Coronel, beaten favorite) – “I was farther back than I wanted and was five, six wide so it was very difficult to win from there.” Trainer Mark Casse (La Coronel, beaten favorite) – “We were kind of just wide the entire trip. No real reaction yet. Just disappointed she didn’t run better.” Breeders’ Cup and Santa Anita Park
