My Gal Betty Cruises in $100,000 Catch A Glimpse

TORONTO, ON – William Werner’s My Gal Betty took the lead at the top of the stretch and took off from there, cruising home to capture the inaugural running of Saturday’s $100,000 Catch A Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine.

Breaking a bit leisurely from the far outside in the field of seven juvenile fillies, My Gal Betty raced three-wide near the back while the 8/5 favorite Eyeinthesky led through opening splits of :23.33 and :46.78. Rounding the far turn with a full head of steam, My Gal Betty made her bid as she straightened for home and exploded past the pace-setter. The Roger Attfield trainee drew clear to win by a growing 4 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:11.62 for the 6-furlong sprint over the yielding turf course.

“We got a good post position and we just played it by ear to see who was going to be the speed and we just sat off behind and just made one run,” Hernandez said. “She was much the best.”

Being the field’s biggest longshot at 39/1 wasn’t enough to deter Charmaine’s Mia from digging in gamely and outfinishing Bold Script for third by a neck, while Eyeinthesky weakened late and finished fourth, 3/4 of a length back. Si Si TequilaStifling, and Lady Azalea completed the order of finish. Limonaia was scratched.

My Gal Betty’s win was her second in three career starts, with her lone loss coming last out here in the $100,000 My Dear Stakes, a race in which she crossed first but was disqualified to third after interfering with a foe in the stretch run. The 2-year-old daughter of Point of Entry has now earned $82,886 in her young career.

“She’s always trying well for me, ever since I got her in Florida, and she’s just a sweetheart of a filly actually,” Attfield said. “I was quite upset when she got taken down the other day. I knew that she was probably going to have to be, but it was unfortunate because I thought she was much the best. But anyway, I was so pleased with her today and because you’re always anxious when the weather changes like this and you have no idea how they are going to handle that kind of going, but obviously she does.”

My Gal Betty returned $7 to win, $4.10 to place, and $2.80 to show. Charmaine’s Mia brought back $26.50 to place and $9.30 to show, while Bold Script paid $4.10 to show.
