Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the 5-year-old daughter of Bernardini stalked the pace while running along the rail in the mile optional claiming event before swinging three wide on the turn into the homestretch and drawing off to score by two lengths under a confident Joel Rosario. “It was a great effort off a long layoff. She’d been training really well. We’re very pleased,” McLaughlin said. “It was great the way she ran off such a long layoff. We hope to have a big year with her.” The 8-5 second choice in a field of five had been sidelined since February upon the discovery of a small ankle chip. The Darley-bred graded stakes-placed mare ran the mile over a fast main track in 1:37.01. Stiffed, the 6-5 favorite ridden by Paco Lopez, finished second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Bourbon Warfare and jockey Corey Lanerie. The victory for Penwith was the fourth in 12 starts, which include a second in the 2013 Demoiselle (G2) and a third in the 2014 Indiana Oaks (G3). “With the time off now – she’s matured into a beautiful mare – hopefully we have a stakes filly on our hands,” said McLaughlin, who has no immediate plans for the Kentucky-bred mare. Friday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot at $88,711 The 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot for Friday’s 10-race program will stand at $88,711.34. The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. Multiple tickets with all six winners returned $25,419.38 Thursday. The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved since a lucky bettor cashed for $76,799 on Jan. 13. WHO’S HOT: Joel Rosario doubled aboard Penwith ($5.20) in the fourth and Old Sport ($7.40) in the seventh. Emisael Jaramillo also visited the winner’s circle twice, scoring aboard My Good Venezuela ($10) in the second and Del Cielo ($14.60) in the eighth.
