LOUISVILLE, KY (Saturday, May 1, 2021)– Champion sprinter Gamine went to the front and then repulsed a challenge from Sconsin to win the 35th running of the $500,000 Derby City Distaff (G1) presented by Kendall-Jackson Winery for fillies and mares to give trainer Bob Baffert a record 220th Grade I victory and to become racings newest millionaire.
“She didn’t get to the break I hoped for but she bounced back really quickly and ran really easy in the early going. She showed what a champion she was and I was very proud of my filly.” Said winning Jockey John Velazquez.
Sconsin, Estilo Talentoso, and Bell’s the One completed the order of finish in the Derby City Distaff.
This is Gamine’s 5th stakes win of her career and 2nd of her 4-year-old season. The 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief improved her career record to 8-7-0-0 and has now earned $1,286,500 for owner Michael Lund Petersen.
“I didn’t know I was that close to the record until a month ago. To do it here on this big day is very special. I’m just happy for Gamine. She got the job done. I told Johnny (Velazquez) that this was the first time she’s run before a crowd. She was looking around. So many things can go wrong but once I saw her down the backside, I knew we were in the clear.” Said winning trainer Bob Baffert.
Gamine returned to $2.40 to win, $2.20 to place, $2.10 to show.
