Fountain of Youth Highlights “Super” Saturday at Gulfstream Park

Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Hidden Scroll will follow up his eye-popping debut romp when he makes his highly-anticipated return in Saturday’s Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park. An official Road to the 2019 Kentucky Derby prep race awarding 50 points to the winner, the Fountain of Youth leads a supersized card featuring eight other graded stakes races worth $1.65 million in purses.

Trainer Bill Mott will send out the 3-year-old son of Hard Spun from post 7 as the 9/5 morning line favorite in the field of 11. The step up in class from his maiden special weight victory on the Pegasus World Cup undercard is affirmation of the talent that Hidden Scroll displayed when crushing his foes by 14 lengths in gate-to-wire fashion.

Horse Racing Picks

Several sophomores have signed up to challenge Hidden Scroll, including a pair of graded stakes winners making their 2019 debuts while carrying co-high weights of 122 pounds.

Vekoma, undefeated in two starts including the Nashua Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct on November 4, drew post 5 and was named the 7/2 second choice on the morning line. The son of Candy Ride has worked steadily at the nearby Palm Beach Downs training facility, including three straight 5-furlong efforts that trainer George Weaver hopes will have him fit for his first fight in nearly three months.

Signalman is perhaps the class of the field, having finished no worse than third in his career while competing in three straight graded stakes events. After running second in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1), he backed up that performance with a hard-fought third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes (G1) before breaking through for victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) on November 24. The Kenny McPeek trainee will break from post 6 with morning line odds of 9/2.
