Kentucky Derby Five Triple Crown Race Sleepers that aren’t Running in the Kentucky Derby May 4, 2016 Kentucky Derby Five Triple Crown Race Sleepers that aren’t Running in the Kentucky Derby May 4, 2016 By: Aaron Halterman twitterfacebooklinkedinemail Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article These five horses will make an impact during the Triple Crown season this year…and you might not have even heard of them. Could one of them become the next Tonalist? Our top horse on the list will certainly be taking that route towards the Belmont Stakes. 1. Unified If you believe in speed figures this horse matches up with the top horses in this crop. He’s only ran twice, but he was impressive in both a maiden special weight and the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes as his competition was no match for him. The major question mark now will be how he does gong two turns. So far he’s only went 6 furlongs and 7 furlongs, but he is pointing towards the two turn Grade 2 Peter Pan on May 14th at Belmont Park for his next start. If he can win that race the hype will swell even more, and with his pedigree stretching out should not be an issue. Looms as a major player in the Belmont Stakes. 2. American Freedom We’ll get to see him this week on the Kentucky Derby undercard when he makes his second career start in the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile. It’s hard to get a solid gauge on him so far because he’s only had one start, and that start was made over a sloppy race track at Santa Anita. However, the clockers in the morning are raving about the potential this horse has been showing. We saw before his career debut that he outworked a nice Baffert unraced horse in Jazzy Times so that just confirms what people are seeing in the mornings from this horse. If he has a good showing in the Pat Day Mile you can bet he’ll be pointed towards the Belmont Stakes. 3. Cupid You shouldn’t give up on this horse after a poor performance in the Arkansas Derby. Immediately after the race Cupid underwent a throat surgery that was similar to the one Frosted underwent last year between the Fountain of Youth and Wood Memorial. Frosted came back to be a different horse after the surgery, and Cupid could do the same type of thing if the surgery corrects his problem. He’s currently pointing towards the Preakness Stakes, and if he can get back to his Rebel Stakes form he could pull off an upset. 4. Stradivari This horse has had two races going two turns and has won them both by a combined 26 lengths! Last time out he ran in a mile and one eighth allowance race at Keeneland and pretty much ran off the screen to win by a little more than 14 lengths. His pedigree could be perfect for a race like the Belmont Stakes, although it is unclear as to where he might run next. Races like the Peter Pan or even the Preakness Stakes have been said to be possible targets for his next start, but nothing is set in stone. With this kind of ability we are all waiting to see what happens. 5. Collected After his Southwest Stakes struggles at Oaklawn Park he was all but forgotten, but since then he’s come back to win two solid races in a row. Last time out in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland he beat a pretty decent field with relative ease which signaled to me that he is a horse that is improving with each start. Like his stablemate Cupid, Collected is also said to be pointing towards the Preakness Stakes for his next start.
