Del Mar Report #7: The Awards

Dullahan Won the Pacific Classic Over Game On Dude

Horse of the Meet: Dullahan – He won the biggest race of the meet, and did it in stylish fashion beating the number one OLDER horse in the country.  Easy pick as Horse of the Meet in my opinion.

Older Male of the Meet: Richard’s Kid – He won a grade 3 and also finished third in the Pacific Classic.  I know Game on Dude beat him, but I felt Richard’s Kid deserved this award because he race twice and won once, where Game on Dude just ran once and finished second.

Older Female of the Meet: Include Me Out – She’s been dominate on the California circuit this year, and Del Mar was no exception.

3 Year Old Male of the Meet: Dullahan – He beat older horses in the meets biggest race, so this was an easy choice.  His single performance tops everyone elses.

3 Year Old Female of the Meet: Lady of Shamrock – She won the meets biggest race for three-year old fillies, so this award belongs to her.

2 Year Old Male of the Meet: Rolling Fog – He broke his maiden here, then won the meets biggest 2-year-old male race.  He’s out of Posse which suggest he’s most likely to be a sprinter, but this award is not about the future, it’s about the present.

2 Year Old Female of the Meet: Executiveprivilege – Not only is she the best two-year old filly from this meet, she’s the best in the country right now as well.

Sprinter of the Meet: Amazombie – Impressive once again, as he beat a very good horse in The Factor.  Much like Executiveprivilege, this might be the best horse in his class.

Owner of the Meet: Jay Em Ess Stables – Their percentage was high, and other than Donegal Racing’s Pacific Classic win, they were the leading money winners for the meet.

Trainer of the Meet: Doug O’Neill – There is a new sheriff in town!  O’Neill would have won the trainers title with ease if he were not suspended, as his assistant continued to win in a huge way while O’Neill was gone.  Love him or hate him, his horses are running super.

Jockey of the Meet: Rafael Bejarano – He won the jockey title with ease, and continues to be the dominate force among California jockeys.

Race of the Meet: Pacific Classic – There were a few stakes races with close finishes that I almost put in this spot, but in the end the Pacific Classic was still the best.  It had a field with international flavor, and an exciting finish with Dullahan overtaking Game On Dude in the final few strides.
