Del Mar Report #5

Del Mar Report #5

Three Stars of the Week

– 1st Star: Personal Diary (KY) – Personal Diary broke her maiden at first asking at Ellis Park, then had lost nine straight races before finding the winners circle again in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on Saturday.  Not only did she win, but she romped past a field that was one of the toughest she ever faced by almost three lengths.  Was this just another illogical Del Mar result, or has Personal Diary come alive at the right time?  Hard to tell…

– 2nd Star: Judy the Beauty (ON) – The Grade 1 winner made her first start in over there months Sunday in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap, and she was as sharp as ever.  She only faced a field of four, but it was a professional effort as she stalked a decent pace and cruised by with ease.  The race probably sets her up for another run in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint where she finished second last year.  With Groupie Doll gone, this could be her year.

– 3rd Star: Heat Du Jour (CA) – I’m not sure where it came from, but Heat Du Jour ran a career best race in the Solana Beach Handicap on Sunday, blowing out the competition by three lengths.  This was his first stakes win, and his sixth victory in twenty-four starts.  If you liked her you were rewarded well as she went off at odds close to 10-1 and paid $21.40 to win.

Flop of the Week

Reneesgotzip (KY) – The big horse returned Sunday after yet another long break, and it’s clear that she has spoiled us from recent efforts off layoffs to land in this spot.  Usually she runs her best races off the bench, but Sunday she had a little trouble at the start, and ended up being a little short for the stretch run.  She’ll likely improve next time out, but Sunday was not her day.
