Breeders’ Cup 2019 Betting

Despite the obvious draw of events such as the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes, 14 of the biggest betting races of the whole year are staged across just two days of racing when the Breeders’ Cup World Championships takes place.

This year, Santa Anita Park hosts the meet for the 10th time across November 1 & 2 in Arcadia, California, where some of the best horses, jockeys and trainers not only from the States but from around Europe and beyond do battle for $30 million in prize money.

Given the size and scope of this event, the Breeders’ Cup is not just a huge weekend for those directly connected to the horses, but for bettors as well given that betting winners at the Breeders’ Cup is a huge badge of honor.

Picking Your Breeders’ Cup Bets

There is no right or wrong way when it comes to handicapping a Breeders’ Cup race, but remember to keep an open mind. Many different form lines come together in each race, i.e. those who have done well in very disparate parts of the country are now racing against each other, often for the first time in the season.

So, horses who’ve run well in big races in Florida go up against the best California has to offer etc and on top of this, we have the spectre of the overseas horses bringing a completely different form line into each contest.

Don’t Rely on the Clock

With those differing form lines in mind, we cannot afford simply to rely on times and on speed ratings. Those racing on faster surfaces, in bigger fields or even in warmer weather may have clocked really good times but that doesn’t mean they are better overall than the horses they are now up against in an exhausting championship battle.

Be sure to check out the level of form each contender has run to, using official ratings for example, and look for horses who bring the various pieces of form together in order to get a more accurate view of which horses are potentially better than the others.

In other words, if you look hard enough you will often find that some horses have run well behind two of more of the contenders for a Breeders’ Cup race, giving you a chance to use that horse to link the main contenders and see what level you believe they are truly at compared with each other.

Where the juveniles are concerned, don’t omit their breeding when it comes to evaluating them. Some horses may have looked good on debut, but are simply not bred to ultimately reach the top level. Many times, top Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winners are bred to compete in the Triple Crown races the following year so even without a lot of form in the book, you can second guess which ones are expected to be top class.
