Race Recaps Covfefe Breeders’ Cup-Bound After Dominating Dogwood September 21, 2019 Race Recaps Covfefe Breeders’ Cup-Bound After Dominating Dogwood September 21, 2019 By: Curtis "Magic" Kalleward twitteremail Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article LOUISVILLE, KY – A dominating effort in Saturday’s $125,000 Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs was the perfect final preparatory race for LNJ Foxwoods’ Covfefe, who will make her next appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park in November. ( Content Continues Below Ad ) Breaking from the far outside post 6 as the 1/5 favorite under Shaun Bridgmohan, Covfefe tracked early leader Take Charge Angel through fractions of :22.49 and :44.95. Taking over command with ease down the lane, Covfefe drew off effortlessly to win by 8 easy lengths. The Brad Cox trainee completed the 7-furlong sprint over the fast main track in a final time of 1:20.51, just 0.07 seconds off of Groupie Doll’s track record from 2012. “The way she’s developed since she was young is what impresses me the most,” Bridgmohan said. “I’ve worked her since she was a 2-year-old and she’s developed into a very special filly. What is most spectacular about her is how smart she has become. She is able to sit off the pace, even with her natural speed. It’s a lot of fun being the passenger on one like this.” Bell’s the One, while no match for the winner, was able to take second by 2 1/4 lengths over Free Cover. Behind them came Istan Council, a yielding Take Charge Angel, and a non-threatening Champagne Anyone to complete the order of finish. The 3-year-old daughter of Into Mischief has now earned $560,025 in her career. “She’s definitely the most talented horse LNJ has ever owned,” said principle Jaime Roth, whose Super Majesty held the previous stakes record time (1:23.02) when winning the 2015 edition. “She’s so special to us and such a talent. She’s just very special.” Covfefe returned $2.40 to win, $2.20 to place, and $2.10 to show. Bell’s the One brought back $4.60 to place and $3.60 to show, while Free Cover paid $4 to show.
