Race Recaps Speedy Soul Goes Last to First in Passing Mood August 31, 2019 Race Recaps Speedy Soul Goes Last to First in Passing Mood August 31, 2019 By: Press Release email Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article TORONTO, ON – Joey Gee Thoroughbreds’ homebred filly Speedy Soul was full of run down the stretch to earn her fourth career added-money victory, this time in Saturday’s $100,000 Passing Mood Stakes at Woodbine. ( Content Continues Below Ad ) With Patrick Husbands aboard, Speedy Soul, the even-money favourite, was last of eight early in the 7-furlong feature, contested over a ‘firm’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course. Trained by Mark Casse, the daughter of Souper Speedy-Classic Soul was patiently handled by Husbands, who watched Silent Mistake and Ciuri take the field through opening splits of :23.21 and :45.80. As the field turned for home down the long stretch, Husbands guided Speedy Soul to the outside and the duo soon picked off their rivals with ease, gathering momentum and speed with each stride to turn a 1/2-length advantage at the stretch call into an eventual 1 1/4-length triumph. Sav, under Justin Stein, also rallied impressively, and bested Miss Ariel by a neck for runner-up honours. Golden Vision was fourth. The final time was 1:21.55. Husbands expected the dark bay to shrug off a sixth-place effort in the Wonder Where Stakes on August 10. On Saturday, Speedy Soul was back on the top of her game. “Last time, it was an off day,” said Husbands. “Looking at the (Daily) Racing Form, she showed me she was much the best horse, so I just wanted to ride her with confidence, and that’s how I rode her today.” The veteran rider and multiple Sovereign Award winner as Canada’s top jockey was never concerned about the outcome at any point in the race. “My confidence in terms of riding her against this crowd today, I could do anything,” offered Husbands. “I know they were not going to get to the wire before me. She’s just a talented filly. She’s smart and you can do anything with her. It’s a blessing to ride horses like her.” In nine career starts, Speedy Soul has five wins, one second and a third. Last year, she won both of her starts, including the Muskoka Stakes. In 2019, she’s won the Fury Stakes and the Bison City Stakes to go along with her Passing Mood score. Speedy Soul returned $4.30, $3.10 and $2.50, and topped a 4-1 exactor with Sav ($4.50, $3.20) worth $14.60. The 4-1-5 triactor with Miss Ariel ($5.50) paid $95.10, and the 4-1-5-8 Superfecta completed by Golden Vision was worth $237.95 for $1.
