Tiz a Slam Wires Singspiel

TORONTO, ON – Chiefswood Stable’s homebred Tiz a Slam made it two straight graded stakes scores on Saturday when he took the field gate to wire in the $125,000 Singspiel Stakes (G3) at Woodbine.

Breaking from the rail under Steven Bahen as the 3/5 favorite, Tiz a Slam immediately set out to a multiple-lengths lead and was allowed to post unpressured opening fractions of :26.92, :53.52, 1:18.57, and 1:42.76. Midway through the far turn, Avie’s Mesa drew the closest anyone got to the leader, but Tiz a Slam dispatched of him easily.

Under just mild urging late in the stretch run, Tiz a Slam crossed the wire with a 2-length advantage in a final time of 2:29.99 for the 1 1/2-mile event over the good turf course.

“It looked like there was no speed to contend with, and that’s how he likes to do it,” Bahen said. “When he gets those easy fractions, he’s very tough down the lane. He’s very versatile.”

Avie’s Mesa remained in second, crossing 3/4 of a length ahead of Sir Sahib, with Itstartswithadrink completing the order of finish.

Melmich, the 2/1 second choice, began falling off sharply in the far turn before being pulled up in the stretch run and getting vanned off. Stewards later confirmed that he had bled through his Lasix.

Tiz a Slam’s win followed his triumph in the Louisville Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs on May 18 and improved his career record to 25-8-3-1. The 5-year-old son of Tiznow has now earned $874,159.

Tiz a Slam returned $3.30 to win and $2.30 to place, while Avie’s Mesa paid $5.70 to place. There was no show betting.
