Tiz a Slam Superb in G3 Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY –  Tiz a Slam shot to the front and never looked back in Saturday’s $100,000 Louisville Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. This was the first win since July of last year for the five-year-old son of Tiznow who has now amassed over $800,000 in career earnings.

Tiz a Slam broke well and went straight to the lead with Soglio and Sharoze close by on the outside. By the first turn, Tiz a Slam drew away from Soglio and Sharoze and held a solid lead on the rest of the field. Back in fourth sat Royal Artillery followed by Strike the Flag, Nessy, and Vettori Kin in the rear. Tiz a Slam maintained the lead, setting fractions of :24.91, :50.81, and 1:16.18, while the rest of the field settled in behind and waited to make a move.

As they approached the final turn, jockey Steven Bahen allowed Tiz a Slam to open up and put more than a length between himself and the rest of the field. Royal Artillery was the first to move on the leader but it was quickly apparent that there was too much ground to make up. Into the stretch, Tiz a Slam lead by 1 1/2 lenghths over the rest of the field. Sharoze, Nessy, and Vettori Kin were three wide into the stretch and all three looked ready for a big run but none had enough to catch the leader. Tiz a Slam finished first, followed by Sharoze, Nessy, and Vettori Kin in quick succession.

“It’s been a great trip to Churchill Downs,” said jockey Steven Bahen. “We had everything go our way today and he ran a really strong race. We had a comfortable lead and he kept going the entire time.”

Tiz a Slam returned $7.00 to win, $3.60 to place, and $3.20 to show. Sharoze brought back $3.60 to place and $2.80 to show, while Vettori Kin paid $3.40 to show.
