Sovereignty is back on top.
Following his dominant victory in Saturday’s Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, Godolphin’s homebred Sovereignty sits No. 1 in the first edition of the 2026 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings.
The 2025 Horse of the Year received 392 total votes and 26 first-place votes, putting him ahead of defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion Forever Young, who checks in second with 360 votes.
The rankings track the leading contenders for the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), scheduled for October 31 at Keeneland.
Sovereignty Returns to the Top
The Whitney marked Sovereignty’s first victory of the 2026 season after finishing second in the Oaklawn Handicap (G1) and third in the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1).
Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the 4-year-old son of Into Mischief captured both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) during his championship 2025 campaign.
Sovereignty also finished No. 1 in last year’s final Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings, but never got the opportunity to compete in the race after being scratched at Del Mar due to a fever.
This year, he has already secured his spot in the Classic through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series after winning the Whitney.
Forever Young, Magnitude Lead the Chase
Defending Classic winner Forever Young (JPN) opens the rankings in second place with 360 votes and 13 first-place votes.
Trained by Yoshito Yahagi for owner Susumu Fujita, Forever Young added another major international victory earlier this year in the Saudi Cup (G1).
Magnitude sits third with 272 votes after an outstanding campaign that includes victories in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) for trainer Steve Asmussen.
Like Sovereignty, both Forever Young and Magnitude have already earned automatic starting positions in the Breeders’ Cup Classic through the Win and You’re In program.
Golden Tempo Leads the 3-Year-Old Contenders
Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo is the highest-ranked 3-year-old, checking in fourth with 254 votes for trainer Cherie DeVaux.
Renegade follows in fifth with 197 votes. The Todd Pletcher trainee finished second to Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby before winning the Arkansas Derby (G1) and most recently the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2).
They are joined in the top 10 by another 3-year-old in Commandment, who sits ninth with 92 votes. The Brad Cox trainee won the Florida Derby (G1) and finished second in both the Belmont Stakes and Jim Dandy.
Whitney Runners Well Represented
Several horses exiting the Whitney appear prominently in the opening rankings.
Godolphin’s Knightsbridge, another Mott trainee, sits sixth with 178 votes following his Monmouth Cup Stakes (G3) victory in July.
Whitney runner-up Nitrogen ranks seventh with 163 votes. The talented 4-year-old filly continues to hold her own against top older males for trainer Mark Casse.
Mott also trains eighth-ranked Baeza, who earned 111 votes after finishing second in the Stephen Foster and fourth in the Whitney.
Antiquarian, third behind Sovereignty and Nitrogen in the Whitney, rounds out the top 10 with 79 votes for trainer Todd Pletcher.
2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings — Aug. 11
The rankings are determined by a panel of Thoroughbred racing media members, horseplayers, and members of the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel. Aaron Halterman and I are both members of the voting panel. Voters rank horses using a 10-through-1 points system.
The next rankings are scheduled to be released August 25, followed by updates on September 8, September 22, September 29, and October 6.
The rankings themselves do not determine qualification or selection into the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic will be contested at 1 1/4 miles on the Keeneland main track and is limited to 14 starters.
With Sovereignty surging back into championship form, Forever Young preparing to defend his crown, Magnitude enjoying a monster season, and leading 3-year-olds Golden Tempo and Renegade continuing to develop, the road to Keeneland is already shaping up as one of the most compelling Classic divisions in recent years.
