Race Recaps Great Stuff Indeed in G3 Toboggan January 27, 2018 Race Recaps Great Stuff Indeed in G3 Toboggan January 27, 2018 By: Curtis "Magic" Kalleward twitteremail Share: share on facebook share on twitter share on linkedin email this article OZONE PARK, NY – Bruce Golden Racing’s Great Stuff showed that he has exactly that, overcoming a less-than-ideal beginning to draw off and win Saturday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Toboggan Stakes at Aqueduct. Squeezed between foes shortly after breaking from post 4 under Dylan Davis, Great Stuff settled to the inside while Takaful and Green Gratto dueled on the front end through opening splits of :22.57 and :45.15. Commencing his rally through the far turn, Great Stuff emerged onto the stretch five-wide but still with all the momentum, taking command with a furlong remaining. The David Jacobson trainee kicked away comfortably in the final jumps to win by 2 1/2 lengths in a final time of 1:23.15 for the 7-furlong main track sprint. “With Takaful and Gratto up front, my plan was not to get too far out of it and ride the rail as long as I could,” Davis said. “Turning for home, he had a lot of momentum and he just was very determined to get it done. I wasn’t worried about (going wide into the stretch) because I had saved all the ground the whole turn. I knew the horse before, and once I angle him out and get him into the clear, he knows what he’s got to do.” After sitting well off the pace early, Vulcan’s Forge rallied late to take second by a 1/2-length over the tiring favorite Takaful. It was another 2 3/4 lengths back to Life in Shambles, with Summer Revolution and Green Gratto completing the order of finish. Great Stuff’s victory improved his career record to 26-7-7-5. The 6-year-old son of Quality Road increased his career earnings to $408,902 after taking home $60,000. “He was training well and doing good, so we thought he’d have a nice shot, and thankfully, it worked out,” said Doug Jacobson, David’s assistant. “This is his distance, we think he’s most effective here, and Dylan rode him great. He rated him perfect and knew 7 furlongs would hit him right between the eyes. We’ll see how he comes out of this race and take our time to decide where to go from here.” Great Stuff returned $25.80 to win, $10.20 to place, and $4 to show. Vulcan Forge brought back $8.30 to place and $3.50 to show, while Takaful paid $2.10 to show.
