Three Stars of the Week
– 1st Star: Gabriel Charles (KY) – How amazing is it that this horse is coming back from a tendon injury and can still run at the Grade 1 level…and win! He’s now hit the board in eight straight races including two stakes victories, one in a Grade 2 race, and of course the Grade 1 Eddie Read on Saturday. This was not a weak running of the race with Finnegan’s Wake and Midnight Storm being quality horses so Gabriel Charles really earned this one. The ultra consistent horse doesn’t always win, but he’s becoming one of the most reliable turf horses in training. Look for him to run at least once more at Del Mar.
– 2nd Star: Prize Exhibit (GB) – The unusual soft ground at Del Mar certainly didn’t hurt this filly on Sunday in the Clemente Handicap. Although its unfair to say that is the only reason she won the race considering she was a Grade 3 winner the race before at Santa Anita. This could be a filly that is getting good at the right time. She sat four lengths off the front runners in this one, and blew by a nice horse in Sunset Glow down the lane to win easily by almost two lengths. Look for her to take on Grade 1 company soon…and expect her to handle herself quite well.
– 3rd Star: Pretty N Cool (KY) – Baffert left no secrets with this filly as he touted her to several racing media outlets as one to watch, and the morning clockers liked her as well. She showed us all why as she lived up to the hype and crushed a strong maiden field on Sunday while earning a Beyer speed figure of 95. This filly will undoubtedly be headed for Graded stakes action next, and will more than likely be an overwhelming favorite. How long she wants to run might be in question, but her sprinting ability looks solid.
Flop of the Week
– Midnight Storm (KY) – It could have been the soft turf that through him off, but Midnight Storm simply didn’t show up on Saturday in the Eddie Read. He pressed the pace early on and looked to be in decent position, but had nothing left in the stretch. Perhaps the freak rain at Del Mar hurt this horse the most this weekend.
