Three Breeders’ Cup Singles

We’re now less than 5 weeks away from the 2021 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, and the fields are starting to take shape. At an event like this, you have to find singles to work into your multi-race bets because with so many competitive races, you’ll need to go deep in other spots.

Here are three horses we’re likely going to single at the Breeders’ Cup:

1. Life Is Good

He’s quickly becoming the most impressive horse in the country. At the start of the year, he was a strong Kentucky Derby favorite, but injuries forced him to miss several months. Despite a long layoff, he still nearly defeated Jackie’s Warrior in the Allen Jerkens Stakes (G1) at a distance much better suited for Jackie’s Warrior. Going a mile is perfect for him right now and his early speed should make him impossible to run down at Del Mar.

2. Jackie’s Warrior

The Sprint often feels wide open, but Jackie’s Warrior seems to be an exceptional talent and stands out amongst this year’s competition. He’s starting to remind me a lot of Mitole, who won this race in 2019 and was also trained by Steve Asmussen. Jackie’s Warrior was recently compared to the great Runhappy, who won this race as a 3-year-old in 2015, a feat which Jackie’s Warrior will attempt to replicate this year.

3. Gamine

It’s weird, but I do believe she’s just the third most likely single at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup, even though she just destroyed her competition in this race last year. This year, she’s been awesome again, but we haven’t quite seen the level of brilliance we saw from her last season. However, she still stands tall over her competition here, and should be considered a single depending on what sequence they decide to put her in, which will be interesting.
