Three Stars of the Week
– 1st Star: Iotapa (KY) – For the first time in her career Iotapa was able to put together two big efforts in a row, as she won the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes Saturday. The win gives her two straight Grade 1 victories, and throws her name into the mix as one of the top older females in the country. The plan from here on out will be to run in the Zenyatta Stakes, and then the Breeders Cup Distaff. Can she compete on the big stage against the likes of Close Hatches and Beholder?
– 2nd Star: Skyway (NY) – I think it’s safe to say that Skyway really likes the poly track. He dominated in a six and a half length victory in his debut at Keeneland, and on Sunday he captured the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes by over a length. His dirt form however is still in question, as he has just one start and was well beaten by two horses that recently were defeated at Saratoga. Where they spot Skyway next will certainly be interesting, but you can bet he’ll take a lot of money if it’s back on the poly track.
– 3rd Star: Red Outlaw (CA) – This Cal-bred just keeps getting better! Friday’s Real Good Deal Stakes victory makes him a perfect four for four in his career, with each win coming at a different race track. His latest win came in wire to wire fashion, which is a slightly different tactic than he’s used in the past when he usually stalks the pace. The options are limitless for Red Outlaw next with lots of Cal-Bred options available.
Flop of the Week
– The Del Mar Turf Course – No matter how you spin it this situation is a joke. Del Mar is one of our premier meets of the season, and the turf surface is unsafe. That is completely unacceptable and an absolute shame.
