The Seattle Seahawks will make their fourth trip to the East Coast for a Monday night showdown versus the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The line has increased in favor of the Seahawks since opening at three points as the road team is now favored by 5.5 points while the total stands at 50, down from 52 at the opening.
The Seahawks were able to tack another win in their win column as they were able to take out the Arizona Cardinals at home by seven points while also covering as three-point favorites. Important to note that prior to their game versus Arizona, the Seahawks entered the contest going just 1-4 against the spread. On the other hand, with only three wins on the season, the Eagles remain first place within the NFC East Division despite losing two-straight games, with their last being a five point road loss to the Cleveland Browns as 2.5 point underdogs. Philadelphia is only 3 - 7 ATS in 2020 including 1-3 in their last four games in addition to being 2-3 against-the-spread at Lincoln Financial Field this year.
The Seahawks have not only won five straight games versus Philadelphia (outright), including a 17-9 road win at Lincoln Financial Field in January of this year as 1 point underdogs, but, the Seahawks have also gone 6-0 against the spread in their last six versus Philadelphia. In fact, the Seahawks are 2-0 SU in their last two games on the road versus the Eagles while also going 4 - 0 against the number during this time.
Seattle picks up much-needed win over Cardinals
The Seattle Seahawks enter their contest with the Eagles motivated and well-rested after not having to suit up in 10 days while finally halting a mini losing skid versus the Cardinals in their most recent outing. Nonetheless, the Seahawks continue to deal with injuries within their offensive line, which may very well affect their passing attack as well as the rushing game versus the Eagles. Fortunately for Seattle, running back Chris Carson is likely to be back in the lineup after missing the last four games for the Seahawks, which should certainly provide a lift for the Seattle rushing attack, which has been middle of the road in 2020.
In Carson's place, however, the team has had to rely on the services of running back Carlos Hyde, who has missed five games this season due to injury, yet came up big versus Arizona in leading the team with 14 rushes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Important to note that Russell Wilson has also contributed to the running game for the Seahawks in 2020 as he is averaging 5.7 yards-per-carry this season while also rushing 10 times for 42 yards in their win over Arizona.
Seattle's bread-and-butter continues to lie within their passing attack as they enter this contest ranked 5th in the NFL in accumulating just under 280 yards passing per game. Expect for the unit to have its fair share of opportunities downfield in this contest as D.K. Metcalf along with Tyler Lockett have been amazing this season for the Seahawks’ offense as they have 17 touchdowns amongst themselves while combining for well over 1500 yards receiving. Important to note, however, that tight end Greg Olsen is dealing with a foot injury and will not be in the lineup until late December.
Despite this, it should be mentioned that Russell Wilson and the Seahawks’ offense posted 318 passing yards with Wilson connecting on a touchdown pass to D.K. Metcalf in their last meeting versus the Eagles in January. In fact, Lockett and Metcalf combined for 11 catches for 222 yards for the contest.
The problem with the Seahawks in 2020 continues to be their inconsistency on the defensive side of the ball , particularly within their pass defense, which is giving up close to 350 yards passing per game. To make matters worse, cornerback DJ Reed is questionable for this contest with a foot injury while cornerback Shaquille Griffin has been dealing with concussion issues, yet is probable to start on Monday. In addition to this, cornerbacks Quinton Dunbar along with Niko Thorpe have already been ruled out due to knee and groin injuries while defensive tackle Bryan Mone is also out indefinitely due to an ankle ailment. Important to note that Seattle was able to limit the damage from Philadelphia's offense in January as they allowed 282 total yards, including just 162 yards in the air.
Eagles desperately needing a winPhiladelphia's defense has also struggled in stopping the run this season as they are allowing 133 yards per game . To make matters worse, linebacker Alex Singleton may not suit up due to an ankle injury while defensive ends Derek Barnett along with Genard Avery are each questionable with knee and elbow injuries . Furthermore, safety Rudy Ford is questionable with a hamstring injury as well .
Important to note that Singleton has really been a leader on the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles in 2020 as he has racked up a total of 34 tackles along with an interception and a sack while Avery and Barnett have combined for six sacks, with Barnett recording 4.5 for the year. On the other hand, Philadelphia has been strong within their past secondary as the unit is ranked 6th in the league in allowing just under 210 yards per game. Defensive end Brandon Brown has been a beast for the Eagles in providing consistent pressure within the backfield as he has not only recorded 28 tackles on the season along with seven sacks, but has also forced two fumbles to lead the defense.
Important to note that the defense for the Eagles has played well in the last two outings at Lincoln Financial Field as the unit allowed a total of 30 points, albeit in division wins over the lowly New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys.
Offensively, the Philadelphia Eagles have struggled throughout the season as they are ranked 28th in passing yards, 26th in total yards, 24th in points scored per game along with ranking 30th in turnovers with 20 on the season. Carson Wentz is completing just 55% of his passes in his last four starts while posting six touchdowns along with a whopping five interceptions during this time. In the Eagles five point loss to Cleveland on the road, Wentz passed for 235 yards for two touchdown passes; However, the quarterback also threw two picks in the game as well, with one resulting in a pick six early in the first quarter which put the Browns up 7 - 0 early.
Nonetheless, Travis Fulgham has been his favorite target in 2020 as the receiver has a tad less than 500 receiving yards along with four touchdown passes . Nonetheless, Fulgham has racked up just two catches for 16 yards in the last two games for the Eagles, including having one reception for just eight yards in the Eagles loss to the Browns. Furthermore, tight end Dallas Goedert led the team with five receptions for 77 yards and a score versus the Browns while receiver Richard Rodgers also had a touchdown catch while ending with two passes for 48 yards; Nonetheless, it should be mentioned that Goedert combined for six catches for 55 yards in three games prior to their meeting with the Browns while Rodgers has just 108 yards on six catches in the last three games for the Eagles.
Finally, receiver Jalen Reagor has also shown signs of production during Philadelphia's 2020 campaign as he is averaging 12 yards per catch in his last two starts; Yet, the receiver has recorded only eight catches for just under 100 yards in his last two starts.
The Eagles will certainly need the assistance of their rushing attack in order to make sure this game does not get out of hand as they are putting up 121 yards on the ground per outing, ranking them 12th in a league . Miles Sanders has been their most effective option at the running back position as he has racked up 585 yards along with three touchdowns in addition to averaging 5.7 yards-per-carry this year. Important to note that Sanders was very solid for the Eagles in the last two outings as he rushed 31 times for just over 150 yards.
Nonetheless, it should be mentioned that the running back has not scored in the last five games for the Eagles. When adding to the equation that the Eagles are continuing to have problems upfront due to injury within their offensive line, one can conclude that the rushing attack (along with protection for Wentz in the pocket) will also be a bit lackluster for this contest as well.
Stats & Trends
- Seahawks are 5-1 ATS in the last six games in week 12
- Seahawks are 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 November games
- Seahawks are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine road games versus a team with a losing record
- Eagles are 1-7 ATS in the last 8 games following a straight-up loss
- Eagles are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games in week 12
- Eagles are 0-6 ATS in last 6 games vs Seahawks
And while both of these teams have struggled on the defensive side of the ball in 2020, I have much more confidence that the Seahawks will be able to move the ball much more consistently versus the Eagles than the other way around. Of course, Philadelphia will certainly have their fair share of opportunities to move the ball in this contest due to Seattle’s shortcomings on the defensive end; Yet, Russell Wilson and the passing attack for Seattle should really make some headway versus an injury plagued Eagles pass secondary. In all, look for the road team to shine in this contest early and often as Seattle will not only win their third game in four outings while traveling to the east coast in 2020, but will also go 3-1 against the number with a win versus the struggling Eagles.
