A little interleague Major League Baseball action on Wednesday evening and we will see the National League East take on the American League East as the Atlanta Braves grapple with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. This will be the final game of a three-game set.
Pitching Probables: Cole Hamels will take the hill for the Braves and he will be opposed by Keegan Akin.
Braves Bounce Back From Embarrassing LossThe Atlanta Braves have a decent lead in the National League East and they will most definitely be a part of the postseason this year but still, they throw in a clunker every now and then. On Monday night, the Braves had that clunker as they lost to the Orioles by a score of 14-1. On Tuesday night, they got a measure of revenge with a 5-1 win over those same Orioles. Te Braves are now 29-20 on the year and they have a 3.5 game lead over the Marlins and a 4.0 game lead over the Phillies in the National League East. Freddie Freeman led their attack with three hits and two RBIs while Adam Duvall ripped his 15th round-tripper of the year. It probably should have been a bigger margin of victory as the Braves had 13 hits and drew five walks but they were just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Snatching up the win was Darren O'Day, who pitched a perfect 5th inning. He is now 4-0 with a 0.64 ERA on the year. Huascar Ynoa got the start and allowed no runs and two hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The braves come in ranked 1st in the league in scoring at 5.82 rpg and 17th in ERA at 4.59.Getting the nod for the Braves will be Cole Hamels, who will be making his first start of the year and his first start as a member of the Braves. Last year, Hamels was 7-7 with a 3.81 ERA in 27 starts for the Cubs. In his career, he has gone 86-63 with a 3.37 ERA in 216 games (215 starts) on the road and 29-23 with a 3.53 ERA in 78 games (77 starts) in Sept/ Oct, plus 14-18 with a 4.40 ERA in 49 starts in Interleague play. Hamels has gone 2-4 with a 5.40 ERa in seven career starts against the Orioles, including 1-3 with a 7.99 ERA in four starts here at Camden Yards.
It Was A Rough Game For The OffenseOne night after plating 14 runs against the Braves, which included a 9-run 3rd inning and 15 hits overall, the Baltimore Orioles were able to muster just four hits and one run in a 5-1 loss in game two of this series. Jose Iglesias had two of those hits and he also drove in their lone run in the game, which came in the bottom of the 9th to avoid being shutout. Baltimore is currently ranked 15th in the league in scoring at 4.73 rpg and 14th in homers with 66. The Orioles have been the worst team in the American League east the last few years and it has even been close but they are just five games under .500 now and they own a 3.5 game lead over the Red Sox, who are in the basement this year. Despite that, they are still not finishing strong as the Orioles have lost six of their last seven games.
Baltimore enters this game ranked 15th in the league in ERA at 4.48.Toeing the rubber for the Orioles will be Keegan Akin and he has gone 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA in five games (three starts) in this his first year in the league. In his three starts, he has gone 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA. Akin has pitched just 10.1 innings in his three starts so he may not be in there that long for this one, especially if that Atlanta offense gets to him early.
Stats & Trends
- 12-3 in their last 15 interleague games vs. a team with a losing record
- 38-14 in their last 52 during game 3 of a series
Trends Baltimore is:
- 57-150 in their last 207 vs. a team with a winning record
- 52-110 in their last 162 games as a home underdog
Cole Hamels is finally ready to make his first start of the year and while he has struggled with the Orioles in his career, I do not see that happening here. The Braves are a much better team than the Orioles and they had their one horrible game for the week when they lost on Monday by a score of 14-1. The Braves bounced back last night with a 5-1 win and they will close out this series with another solid win. The Orioles are 3-7 in their last 10 interleague home games vs. a left-handed starter and 54-110 in their last 164 home games overall. Baltimore has been sneaky at times this year but this is not a game they will win.
