The Orioles have lost two in a row and in Game 1 of an interleague series they play host to the Washington Nationals, who had their win streak snapped in their last game.
The Nationals had won three in a row before losing their last game. While the club is five games under .500 and in fourth place in the NL East they are still only six games out of first place. Washington ranks in the middle of the pack in both runs scored and team ERA.
The Orioles had won three in a row before losing their last two games. They have the fewest wins in the AL and are in the basement of the AL East 26.5 games out of first place. Not shocking for a club that ranks dead last in the Majors in team ERA and only 24th in runs scored.
Lineup Cools DownAfter scoring 32 runs in three wins the Nationals’ lineup cooled off in their last game in a 3-1 10-inning loss to the Miami Marlins. In the loss the team had six hits and Andrew Stephenson had the lone RBI. Juan Soto leads the team in RBI (54) and he has been en fuego as of late with five HR and 12 RBI over his last six games. Trae Turner leads the Nats batting .320 and has five hits over his last three games. On the season Washington is 18-25 on the road.
Patrick Corbin (6-8 5.66 ERA) gets the call for Game 1 of this series and he was roughed up in his last outing giving up six runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 10-4 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Nats have lost three of his last four starts and in his last two road starts he gave up five runs in 12 innings while in his last two road starts he has given up 12 runs in 10 innings. Corbin faced the Orioles at home on May 23rd and gave up four runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-5 win.
Pitching Is Not SharpIn winning three games in a row the Orioles only gave up five runs but they have given up 14 in losing their last two games. The bullpen blew it in their last game, which was a 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays where they gave up a two-run two-out single in the ninth inning. Pat Valaika and Ryan Mountcastle each went yard and combined for three RBI in the loss.

Trey Mancini leads the Orioles in HR (16) and RBI (57) and while he only has one RBI over his last five games, he does have eight hits in that span. On the season Baltimore has the worst home record (13-30) in baseball.
Jorge Lopez (2-12 6.04 ERA 1.64 WHIP) goes for the birds and he gave up four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in his last start, which was a 8-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. The Orioles had lost his previous five starts where he gave up at least four runs in three of them. Lopez has given up two runs in each of his last two home starts and in his lone start against the Nats this season on May 25th on the road he gave up two runs in five innings in a 4-2 loss.
Stats & Trends
The Washington Nationals are:
- Over is 4-1-1 in Nationals last 6 overall
- Over is 8-3 in Nationals last 11 games vs. a right-handed starter
- Over is 4-1 in Nationals last 5 games following a loss
The Baltimore Orioles are:
- Over is 4-0 in Orioles last 4 interleague games
- Over is 4-0 in Orioles last 4 home games vs. a left-handed starter
- Over is 5-2 in Orioles last 7 vs. a team with a losing record
- Over is 20-6 in Orioles last 26 home games
In five of the last six games between these teams the Over has been the pick and I am leaning towards that pick in this game. The Orioles only rank 24th in the Majors in runs scored and before scoring only one run in their last game they had scored 32 in their previous three games. Corbin and Lopez each gave up four runs in their last start and Lopez has an ERA north of six while Corbin has one just south of six. I look for both starters to get roughed up in this game and for quite a few players to cross the plate for both clubs. That is why the Over is the money pick for Game 1 of this interleague series.
