The Phillies and the Braves have both been up and down as of late, as they face off in Game 1 of an NL East series.
The Braves played a doubleheader yesterday and lost the first game and had the second suspended due to weather. The team has lost four of their last six games and they are in third place in the NL East 4.5 games back of the New York Mets and one game back of the Phillies.
The Phillies have lost their last two games after winning five of six. They have won five of their last six home games against the Braves and the club is led by a lineup that ranks tied for 13th in the Majors in runs scored.
Runs HelpThe strength of the Braves is their lineup, which ranks 11th in baseball in runs scored but the team has only scored five runs in their last two games. In the first game of their doubleheader yesterday they lost to the Padres 3-2 where they only had five hits with Austin Riley having the lone RBI with Atlanta scoring one run on an error. Young star Ronald Acuna Jr. leads the team in HR and was having a solid season but is out for the year with a knee injury. Ozzie Albies leads the club in RBI and has two in his last seven games where he is batting .200. On the season Atlanta is 20-23 on the road.
Charlie Morton (8-3 3.69 ERA 1.12 WHIP) gets the nod in this series opener and in his last start he gave up three runs on six hits in six innings in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Braves had won his previous two starts and the one before his last was his best of the season tossing seven scoreless innings and only allowing two hits in a 5-0 win over the Miami Marlins. Atlanta is 1-2 in Morton three starts against the Phillies and his last one facing them on May seventh was his worst outing of the season only lasing 2/3 of an inning and giving up six runs in a 12-2 loss.
Swept in the Big AppleThe Phillies are coming off a two-game road series against the New York Yankees where they lost both games by a single run. In the last game they lost 6-5 in 10 innings where Jean Segura went yard and pinch hitter Luke Williams had two RBI.
Rhys Hoskins leads the club with 21 HR and 57 RBI and he has struggled as of late with only three hits in his last 20 at bats. Bryce Harper leads them batting .287 and he has hit safely in his last five games and in 11 of his last 12. On the season Philly is 27-17 at home.
Matt Moore(0-1 5.25 ERA 1.61 WHIP) takes the hill for this Game 1 and in his last start he gave up two runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins. The Phillies have won his last four starts after joining the starting rotation from the bullpen and he has given up two runs in each of his last three starts.
Stats & Trends
The Atlanta Braves are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter
- 6-2 in their last 8 vs. National League East
- 11-5 in their last 16 vs. a team with a winning record
The Philadelphia Phillies are:
I think the Braves have good value in this game as a road underdog even though they have lost five of their last six road games facing the Phillies. Morton gave up three runs in his last start and in his previous had his best one of the season. On the other side of the coin, Moore has given up two runs in each of his last three starts. He will be facing a Braves team that has only scored five runs in their last two games, but they will get some runs in this game. Morton will have a good outing and I see a close game where the Braves will pull it out and get a W in the City of Brotherly Love.
