The finale of a 3-game home series for the Atlanta Braves versus the Philadelphia Phillies will end Sunday night at 7 pm EST at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, the Braves are favorites (-161) for the contest, up from -144 at the opening.
The Braves went up 2-0 for the series after a 5-4 home win thanks to a huge 1st inning where the team's first 3 batters hitting doubles along with a home run. Atlanta finished off the contest with a run apiece in the 6th and 7th innings to get back to .500 on the year after starting the season 0-4. Freddie Freeman went 1-4 in the contest with 3 RBI's while Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson also accounted for a hit along with an RBI. Furthermore, Ronald Ocuna, Jr. along with Travis d'Arnaud both went 2-4 for the contest as the Braves ended the game with 9 hits.
Andrew McCutchen and Bryce Harper blasted home runs for the Phillies while Ian Anderson had a rough night on the hill for the home team lasting 5.1 innings while giving up 4 earned along with 2 homers in addition to striking out 6 batters. However, the bullpen was able to eat up solid inning allowing just a hit the remainder of the way while striking out 6. Zack Eflin pitched 6 frames for Philadelphia surrendering 4 earned runs and a homer; Yet, did not factor in the decision.
Moore seeks to atone for short outing versus MetsMatt Moore received the no-decision in his 1st start of the year at home versus the New York Mets April 5th after going just 3.1 innings while giving up 2 earned on 4 hits. And while he struck out 4 batters, he also walked 4 in the 5-3 win. The left-hander veteran is attempting to find a consistent spot in the Phillies rotation after spending time pitching in Japan last season. And while he performed well on the mound during spring training, he did allow 2-runs in the 4th versus the Mets before the team reeled off 5 in the 8th to pick up the win.

Nonetheless, despite not having faced the Braves since June 2017, he pulled the winning decision in a quality, 7-inning start while suiting up for the San Francisco Giants. Moore struck out 6 in the contest and allowed 3 earned runs on 88 pitches in the 6-3 win at Truist Park. Ender Inciarte and Dansby Swanson are each 1-3 versus the left-hander while Pablo Sandoval is hitless in 3 at bats. Marcell Ozuna, however, has had the most success versus Moore batting .455 on 11 at bats while recording a double, a homer, along with 2 RBI's.
Smyly gets the quality start despite team lossDrew Smyly picked up the no-decision in his 1st start of the year in a 6-5 road loss to the Washington Nationals April 6th. And while he gave up a homer along with 2 earned in the contest, the left-hander pitched very well lasting 6 frames while striking out 8 for an ERA of 3.00. Important to note that Smyly has been plagued with no-decisions of late picking up ND's in 7 of his last 8 starts.

In fact, it is worth noting that he has not picked up a win since September of 2019 when he blanked the New York Mets on the road while going 7 innings and striking out 6 batters.
The left-hander last faced the Phillies lineup while suiting up for the Detroit Tigers dating back to 2013 pitching only one inning in relief while striking out one in a 12-4 home win. And while Smyly has not had much experience facing Philadelphia of late, Andrew McCutchen is 3-4 for 2 home runs and 4 ribbies versus while Didi Gregorius is hitless in 10 at bats.
Stats & Trends
- Phillies are 1-5 in last 6 meetings in Atlanta.
- Phillies are 1-8 in last 9 road games.
- Braves are 4-0 in last 4 outings.
- Braves are 3-0 in last 3 home meetings.
With Moore going just over 3 innings in his first outing of the year while continuing to re-acclimate himself to the bigs after a season overseas, I see him struggling in this contest versus a Braves lineup that can really string hits together to put runs across the plate. In fact, after posting only 3 runs in their 3-game season opener on the road versus the Phillies, the team has scored 5 or more in 4 of their last 5, overall.
Smyly was not overly impressive in his last start; However, he was able to pick up a quality start while punching out 8 batters. The Phillies have been up and down offensively to begin the year and I see them struggling in the finale of this NL East set (as they have done for much of the weekend thus far).
