Oaklawn Report #10

Three Stars of the Week

– 1st Star: Subtle Indian (KY) – The feature race of the weekend was the Gazebo Stakes, and it was Subtle Indian who got the perfect trip and was able to win by a half length going wire to wire.  The win makes the gelding a perfect three for three, and his breeding suggests he will continue to excel in sprint races.  There’s not much left for him at Oaklawn, however the Bachelor on April 10th has been mentioned so there is a possibility we’ll see him one more time.

– 2nd Star: Holiday Man (KY) – Poseidon’s Way and Private Prospect were all the hype in a tough Friday allowance, but Holiday Man got the lead and never let it go prevailing in wire to wire fashion by about a half length.  For much of the stretch it looked as though Poseidon’s Way would go right past Holiday Man, but he dug down deep and held on.  Will they try a Derby Prep next time out, or just a regular stakes?

– 3rd Star: Steel Cut (OK) – Three straight wins for this one at Oaklawn, and they’ve been fairly easy!  Saturday’s allowance win was her biggest score to date, as she stalked a hot early pace and pounced late to prevail by nearly three lengths.  She was also able to defeat heavy favorite Teardrop, who has always been highly regarded.  There are plenty of options for this one next time out so it will be interesting to see what they do with her.

Flop of the Week

Private Prospect (KY) – This has been one of the more disappointing horses of the meet.  After running seventh in the Southwest Stakes they tried dropping this one in class on Friday, but he ran even worse finishing sixth in an allowance race.  The horse might need a cut back in distance, and also just might not like the slop very well.
