Del Mar Report #4

Three Stars of the Week

– 1st Star: Moulin de Mougin (KY) – The horse with the funny name broke through Sunday to grab her first stakes victory, and it was  big one!  After trailing the field for most of the race, jockey Mike Smith gave her a perfect ground saving stretch run and was victorious by about a half length in the Grade 2 John C Mabee Stakes.  It’s only her fourth win in thirteen starts, but this filly be Curlin is starting to blossom.  Her 2014 campaign has been solid.

– 2nd Star: Enterprising (FL) – It wasn’t quite as dramatic as the Oceanside Stakes when he just got up in time, but Enterprising used his come from behind style again to win the La Jolla on Saturday.  This time it was by a little more than a length, as the added distance was probably to his liking.  The horse seems to be getting better with every race, and could be ready for Grade 1 competition next.

– 3rd Star: Om (KY) – American Pharoah was supposed to be the horse that would romp in a 2 year old maiden special weight race on Saturday, but it was Om at 22-1 that was a total runaway winner.  His 97 beyer speed figure is the highest of any two year old so far, and probably makes him the favorite for any stakes race held in California in the near future.  Was this race a major fluke, or can he do it again?  Could be interesting to see…

Flop of the Week

Miss Serendipity (ARG) – She went off as the favorite in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes, but ended up off the board and well beaten when it was all said and done.  Perhaps the layoff was too much for her to overcome, or maybe it was the uncomfortable trip she encountered.  Either way this was not her best effort, and we expect much better next time out.
