Del Mar Report #2

Del Mar Report #2

Three Stars of the Week

– 1st Star: Big Macher (CA) – The year of the Cal Bred continues!!  Big Macher was as tough as they come in winning the Bing Crosby on Sunday, as he had to hold off the very classy Goldencents to get the job done.  Clearly Goldencents needs more ground to be completely effective, but that doesn’t discount Big Macher’s win one bit.  The progression from maiden claimer to Grade 1 winner is obviously not at easy one, but Big Macher has accomplished the feat.  The Bing Crosby was his second straight graded stakes victory.

– 2nd Star: Fed Biz (KY) – I think it’s safe to say Fed Biz loves Del Mar!  We hadn’t seen him since the Breeders Cup Mile, but that didn’t seem to bother him one bit in the San Diego Handicap on Saturday.  He went straight to the front right from the start and never looked back winning be almost six lengths.  The horse clearly has always had a lot of talent, but Del Mar moves him up even more.  We’ll see if he can take that form elsewhere next time out.

– 3rd Star: Irish Surf (KY) – Wire to wire winners seem to be a theme at the meeting so far this year, with Friday’s edition of the Cougar II being the best example.  Irish Surf had never even hit the board in a graded race, but won the mile and half Cougar II by eight lengths in wire to wire fashion!  Who knows if it’s the track or the distance that moved this horse up, but you can’t take away the fact he won.  Might be leery to bet him next time out though.

Flop of the Week

Declassify (KY) – The clear cut second choice in the Bing Crosby had all kinds of problems coming out of the gate and never had any chance.  It’s been tough to close ground at Del Mar this meeting, and he certainly wasn’t going to make it up in a six furlong race.  However, this is not a performance that I would hold against him when he runs next time out from a betting standpoint.
