Bravura Favored in $100,000 Clever Trevor at Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY – The feature race for the first week of November at Remington Park is Friday night’s $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes. The seven-furlong event for 2-year-olds is the last local prep leading to the $250,000 Springboard Mile in December, the richest 2-year-old race of the season.

Bravura, second most recently in the $75,000 Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. Texas Stallion Stakes on Sept. 12 at Retama Park north of San Antonio, has been tabbed by odds-maker Rick Lee as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the Clever Trevor. Owned by Victoria Ashford of Maud, Texas and trained by Bret Calhoun, jockey Cliff Berry will have the mount. Berry also rode the colt in his stakes runner-up at Retama.

Whence has second status in the morning-line at 5-2 odds. Owned by William and Corinne Heiligbrodt of Houston, Whence will make his first start in the central time zone. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Whence debuted in early September at Saratoga in upstate New York before using two runs to break his maiden status at the recently completed Keeneland fall season in Lexington, Ky. Angel Cruz, the main jockey for Asmussen at Remington Park, will have the mount on Whence for the first time.

Cash Bonus enters the Clever Trevor on a two-race winning streak, scoring in an allowance race at Remington Park in September before winning the $75,000 El Joven Stakes at one mile over turf at Retama Park in October. Owned by Carl Moore Management of Kennedale, Texas and trained by Calhoun, Cash Bonus will have C.J. McMahon aboard.

7.    Whence: Steve Asmussen, Angel Cruz, 5-2

8.    Messer Mad Cat: Brent Davidson, Danny Sorenson, 30-1

The Clever Trevor Stakes is named in honor of the talented Oklahoma-bred millionaire and first state-bred winner of the Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in 1989. Clever Trevor brought immediate star-status to Remington Park and Oklahoma racing. At age 29, he still resides at Robin’s Nest Farm in Piedmont, Okla. the family home of his trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

The Clever Trevor Stakes was won by Shotgun Kowboy in 2014, he went on to become just the second Oklahoma-bred to win the Oklahoma Derby this season.

The Clever Trevor will be race seven of nine on Friday at Remington Park with an approximate post time of 10:03pm. The first race on Friday is at 7pm.
