Breeders Cup Live Longshots

Ron the Greek could Take Home the Biggest Prize

We’ve given you weekly picks for all the Breeders Cup races over the last few weeks, and tomorrow we’ll post our last set of predictions until our massive preview is posted on Breeders Cup week.  However, today we’ll focus on a few horses that might light up the tote board on horse racing’s biggest day.

Ron the Greek – I’m thinking out of the three Bill Mott horses pointing towards the Classic this is the one that has a shot to take down Game On Dude.  He’s been very consistent all year, and already has a big win over the Santa Anita surface which is more important than you might think.

Optimizer – He’s been my pick to win the race for a few weeks, and he also qualifies under the “light up the tote board” category.  He’s found his spot on the lawn, and it looks like he can run all day on it.

Tapizar – Probably the craziest of my long shot picks, but I just can’t forget that breath-taking win he had over this track early in the year.  The mile distance suits him well, so maybe that Santa Anita track will jump him up a few spots.

Hamazing Destiny – This is one of the toughest horses out there.  Lukas seems to run him every other week, and all the horse does is show up and run hard every time.  It’s his turn to win one of these big races.  He actually hasn’t raced since late August, and he’s working out very well leading up to this.

Dust and Diamonds – I know everyone thinks Groupie Doll is a slam dunk, and it’s hard to argue that.  With that being said, if she stumbles this one can pick up the pieces.  They’ve taken their time with her, and it could pay off in a huge way.

Brown Almighty - Not a huge Kent Desormeaux fan, but make no mistake…this guy is a huge upgrade from what this horse has had.  Brown Almighty has had two less than desirable trips, and don’t forget Kent and trainer Tim Ice teamed up and had a nice run with Summer Bird in 2009.

Commander - The marathon is wide open, and after a lot of research I think I’m going to make this guy my pick.  He’s been on quite a roll lately.  In 2011 he was a horse that his connections had high hopes for and basically he flopped, but now he’s found his stride north of the border.  It woud be a good story if he won a BC race.
